League of Legends World Championship Play-In Results and Future Group Stages

We recently discussed the League of Legends World Championship on Lucky7Bonus, including how it works and which teams are expected to play. The Worlds have been going on for a week now, the play-in rounds have already ended, and the group stages start this Monday, October 11! Today we're taking a look back at the results of the play-in and what's next for the League of Legends World Championship Main Event.

Having trouble keeping up with the 2021 League of Legends Worlds? Be sure to read our latest article on the subject, which explains how it works, the history of the championship, the location and the stakes for the biggest League of Legends teams.

League of Legends 2021 Worlds Play-In Results

First of all, let's remember that the "Play-in" is the qualification phase of the World Championship. This phase gives 4 teams out of the 10 present a chance to participate in the "Main Event": the Championship itself and thus join the 12 teams preselected for the League of Legends Worlds 2021.

The Play-Ins feature some very strong teams, but they still have to prove themselves to officially compete in the League of Legends World Championship. Here's a quick reminder of the 10 teams that have played each other since October 5:

  • Hanwha Life Esports (South Korea)

  • Cloud9 (North America)

  • Beyond Gaming (Southeast Asia)

  • RED Canids Kalunga (Brazil)

  • PEACE (Oceania)

  • Galatasaray Esports (Turkey)

  • Infinity Esports (Latin America)

  • Unicorns of Love (Commonwealth of Independent States)

  • LNG Esports (China)

  • DetonatioN FocusMe (Japan)

No surprise for Cloud9, the North American team was highly anticipated, especially with their famous midlaner Luka Perkovic aka Perkz, who was an 8-time European champion with the G2 team. They would only finish in 4ᵉ place to narrowly clinch their spot at the League of Legends World Championship. Quite a feat with 3-0 against Team PEACE with games lasting no more than 20 minutes, aggressive gameplay and good strategies were put in place by the North American team.

Cloud9 will be in Group A during the Group Phases, otherwise known as "the group of death" as the team will have to face FPX, the Chinese world champion team in 2019 as well as DAMWON the Koreans world champions last year.

A chance for the North American team to get closer to the podium? That's all we hope for Cloud9. Otherwise, it is the teams DFM (Japan), LNG Esports (China) and Hanwha Life Esports (South Korea) that have qualified for the group stages. This is the end of the League of Legends World Championship for the other 6 teams.

A small scandal occurred during the League of Legends World Championship Play-In: player Mao-An Chien aka Maoan, midlaner for the Beyond Gaming team (Southeast Asia) was caught passing on strategic information to a relative to help him bet on picks and bans. The player was suspended for bad behavior by Riot Games. The team was still able to replace him for his role, but Beyond Gaming lost their match 3-0 to Hanwha Life Esports.

Upcoming Group Phases from October 11 to 17

The Group Phases start today, Monday, October 11 and will end this Sunday, October 17. Matches will take place every day, except on Thursday. The 16 teams will compete in different groups: group A, B, C and D. Each team will face a team of its group, the 2 best teams in a group will be able to reach the next phase with direct elimination.

With the end of the play-in rounds, the real League of Legends World Championship can now begin. Lucky7Bonus presents you with a small overview of the different groups that will be competing for almost a week:

  • Group A: FunPlus Phoenix, Rogue, Cloud9 and DAMWON

  • Group B: 100 Thieves, T1, DetonatioN FocusMe and EDward Gaming

  • Group C: Fnatic, PSG Talon, Royal Never Give Up and Hanwha Life Esports

  • Group D: Gen.G, Mad Lions, LNG Esports and Team Liquid

The 4 winners of the Play-in have been drawn to join one of the groups. Hanwha Life Esports, one of the most surprising teams of the Play-in will directly face Fnatic, which tends to win all its games at the moment, thanks in particular to the new French recruit: Adam. Which teams can advance to the third phase? The 8 best teams will face each other during the direct eliminations with 3 winning rounds, then will take place the quarter finals, the semi-finals and the final.

Who will be crowned League of Legends World Champion in 2021? We at Lucky7Bonus will be supporting the European teams, especially Fnatic with the excellent player Adam, former member of KCorp.
