It's the event that all poker fans have been waiting for for several months! After more than a year of absence due to the health crisis that hit the whole world, the WSOP (World Series Of Poker) will indeed take place this year. The World Series of Poker had a record turnout last year in 2019 and the world's biggest poker event will be back in action from September 30 to November 23, 2021.

The WSOP will of course be held in Las Vegas, the gambling capital of the world, as it is every year. Players from all over the world will compete for nearly two months at the poker tables of the Rio All Suite Hotel and Casino, which has been hosting this global event for over 15 years now. A total of 88 bracelets will be up for grabs in this 2021 edition, with buy-ins ranging from $400 for the lowest priced tournament to $250,000 for the Super High Roller.

What is the WSOP?

The World Series Of Poker, also called WSOP, are in literal translation the World Poker Championships. The first edition of this festival took place in 1970 and since then the WSOP has been held every year in Las Vegas. The event is attended by both professional players and thrill-seeking amateurs, all of whom have their sights set on the famous WSOP bracelet promised to the winners of the various tournaments.

History of the WSOP

The WSOP was started by Benny Binion, the famous owner of Binion's Horseshoe Casino, who took the initiative to gather the best players of the day and have them play at the same table, in a cash game.

The popularity of the WSOP would come a few years later, thanks in particular to Thomas Preston, nicknamed "Amarillo Slim" and winner of the 1972 edition. This Texan quickly became a public figure thanks to his victory and helped democratise poker. The first editions were not very well attended, until the card game gained momentum and became a full-fledged cerebral sport. Television has also played an important role in the growth of poker, as the broadcasting of tournaments has greatly accelerated the development of the game.

Chris Moneymaker's crazy story

As the attendance grew each year, the number of tournaments began to multiply. Over the years, the WSOP has become a must-attend annual event for all poker fans and experienced players. However, in 2003, the World Poker Championships were able to reach a new audience and interest more and more fans thanks to the incredible story of the man who won the WSOP Main Event 2003: the aptly named Chris Moneymaker.

This humble accountant from Tennessee lived the dream of every amateur player. With a passion for card games, Moneymaker took advantage of the online poker boom to try his luck at the virtual tables and attempt to qualify for the WSOP Main Event, a tournament for which you still have to pay $10,000 in order to be eligible to participate. This young man won two qualifying tournaments that gave him access to the legendary tournament for a handful of dollars. And the impossible happened!

After several days of struggle, Chris Moneymaker has finally won the Main Event of the WSOP! The American had qualified for only $39 and won over $2,500,000 with this exceptional performance! After the tournament, Moneymaker said: "If I could win, anyone can". This small, innocuous phrase has given the WSOP a new impetus and attracted many amateur players.

The WSOP Schedule

As explained in the preamble, the WSOP 2021 kicks off on September 30 with the traditional casino employee tournament in Las Vegas. This will be followed by no less than 88 tournaments of all kinds, with different prize pools and different poker variants, the most common of which is of course No Limit Hold'Em.
