The extra 30 minutes were physically demanding, with the Danish players feeling the strain. Kasper Hjulmand's men bent, but did not break, until 102ᵉ minutes and a contact on Raheem Sterling in the Denmark area. The Dutch referee, Danny Makkelie, did not hesitate for a second and gave a more than generous penalty to England, who did not need it.

After a few minutes of uncertainty, the VAR did not overrule the central referee and captain Harry Kane came up alone against the keeper. His effort was saved by Kasper Schmeichel, and the England number 9 had to try twice to give his team the lead (2-1, 104ᵉ).

The second half of extra time was one-sided, with England regaining control of the ball as they managed the end of the game remarkably well.
