Group A

Italy was the favorite in this group, but they finally held their own, and in the right way. The Squadra Azzurra won their 3 games with brio, keeping their goal untouched once again. The team led by Roberto Mancini showed incredible defensive solidity as usual, with a central defense composed of Leonardo Bonucci and Giorgio Chiellini, as well as goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma, a new recruit from Paris Saint-Germain.

But it would be simplistic for Italy to talk only about their defensive base. In fact, the teammates of Ciro Immobile offered a beautiful game with a lot of movement and a variation of short and long play very interesting and promising for the future.

The Turkey is THE big disappointment of the group phase of the Euro 2020. The team was never able to worry its opponents, and finished at the bottom of group A with 0 points. Wales and Switzerland showed some limitations but were able to rely on their individuality to continue the adventure.

Group B

Even if everything was not perfect, Belgium still held its position by finishing on top of group B with 9 points. After a good start against Russia (3-0), the Red Devils had a few scares against Finland and Denmark. The Belgians were able to count on the return of Axel Witsel and Kevin De Bruyne, both injured at the beginning of the competition.

This group B was unfortunately marked by a sad event, not sporting but medical. Indeed, during the first match of this group, between Denmark and Finland, the number 10 of the Danish selection, Christian Eriksen, collapsed on the field, in the middle of the match. The player suffered a heart attack and was fortunately resuscitated by paramedics in the stadium and is now out of danger.

Christian Eriksen's teammates paid tribute to the Danish attacking midfielder by giving their best and by winning a spectacular match against the Russians (4-1). Denmark will now accompany Belgium in the last 16.

Group C

This pool C was similar to the previous one, with a favourite nation and 3 selections of equal level. Logic was respected in this group as the Netherlands won all their games, with the manner moreover. Led by an excellent Memphis Depay, very influential in the game and scorer of two goals, the Netherlands are among the teams that have offered the best football in this group stage and have qualified without any difficulty.

The Netherlands will be joined in the Round of 16 by David Alaba's Austria, a new recruit from Real Madrid, who won two games against Northern Macedonia and Ukraine. Despite their two defeats, the Ukrainians will still advance to the next stage of the competition as the nation led by 2003 Ballon d'Or winner Andrei Shevchenko finished in the top 4 thirds of all pools.

Group D

This is perhaps the group within which there were the most twists and turns. Firstly England, the much anticipated nation in this Euro 2020, disappointed once again in international competition. Despite the plethora of players at his disposal, the coach Gareth Southgate has not yet managed to find the right tactical balance, and the game proposed does not offer any guarantee for the rest of the tournament. One of the reasons for these difficulties is the poor performance of Harry Kane, the captain of this team who is struggling to get into the tournament and has yet to score a goal.

Thanks to a hard-fought victory against the Czech Republic, the English still finished top of group D and will have the privilege of playing at home once again in the Round of 16. As for the Czechs, they played in a relaxed manner and created a surprise by beating a valiant Scotland team at Hampden Park, thanks to an exceptional goal by Patrik Schick from the centre circle, and then hung on to Croatia. The finalists of the last World Cup still managed to reach the last 16 of the Euro 2020, by easily beating the Scots (3-1).

We had announced a complicated group, we were close to the truth! This pool E of the Euro 2020 had a smell of trap for Spain. La Roja managed to keep the ball easily but had difficulties to be dangerous, with a sterile domination and a lot of waste in the last movement. The Iberian team had to break down the opposing defenses and even had to concede a draw against Sweden and Poland. After two points in two games, doubts were beginning to creep into the minds of Luis Enrique's men. However, Spain made up for it in style with a 5-0 victory over Slovakia.

Despite this crushing victory, it is not the Spaniards but the Swedish who finish at the top of this group E with 7 points! Sweden managed to get a draw against Spain and win their last two games. The Sweden will face the Ukraine in the round of 16 and can legitimately hope to reach the quarter finals of the Euro 2020.

Group F

The most difficult group of this competition has kept all its promises! This group composed of the last 2 World Champions and the Reigning European Champion was slow to deliver its final verdict, notably because of a valiant Hungary team that played the referee between these three leading football nations. France managed to finish first in their group by beating Germany on their home ground (1-0).

The next match was more complicated for the Bleus, who were beaten by the Hungary, who were better than expected, and then by Portugal (2-2) after a very competitive match. In this match, Karim Benzema managed to open his account by scoring twice, as did his former teammate Cristiano Ronaldo. A good omen for the rest of the French team's competition.

Portugal beat Hungary 3-0 in their opening game but then lost to Germany 2-4, who were keen to make up for their poor start. Germany still had a scare against Hungary as the Mannschaft were simply eliminated with 10 minutes to go, but managed to equalise through Leon Goretzka (2-2).

Portugal and Germany will have their work cut out for them in the last 16 of Euro 2020 as both nations will meet contenders for the final victory. Fernando Santos' men will face Belgium, while Germany will face England at Wembley.
