Euro 2020: Quarter final ties

On 11 June 2021, Turkey and Italy kicked off this Euro 2020 with a long-awaited opening match. Less than 20 days later, only 8 teams are still in the race for the European Championship title.

We were treated to a tough round of 16, where each team had its say. The gap between the favourites and the nations considered to be the smallest is no longer so impressive and it seems that everyone has the weapons to win. The knockout matches were full of surprises and did not disappoint as the scenarios were so improbable.

Euro 2020 Round of 16 Results

Wales 0 - 4 Denmark

This is the only match with a real clear win in these round of 16. After a rather closed start where both teams neutralize each other, Dolberg opens the score for Denmark at the 27ᵉ minute mark.

The Walloonians do not respond and the game falls into the hands of Denmark. The second half was completely one-sided for the Danes who punished every mistake of their opponent. The young Kasper Dolberg scored twice in the 48ᵉ minute before Maehle stunned Wales with the 3-0 goal in the 88ᵉ. Barcelona's Martin Braithwaite then added to the tally in injury time with the 4ᵉ goal of the match.

Clear and logical victory for Denmark as they assert themselves in the competition.

Italy 2 - 1 Austria

One of the favourites for the championship title had a scare in this match against a team playing the first round of 16 in their history. The Squadra Azzura dominated the beginning of the match without really managing to worry the Austrian keeper. The Italians hit the goal 3 times in the 12ᵉ, 14ᵉ and 17ᵉ minute without managing to find the net. Austria responded timidly with a volley with no real intent and the Italians kept the lead with a shot on the upright in the 33ᵉ minute as well as another, on target, but saved in the 43ᵉ minute.

After a first half without any goals, the second half intensifies. Austria was clearly dominating and creating dangerous chances. The Italians are solid defensively and hold the furniture. In the 67th minute, Arnautovic scored with a header and delivered his country for a few seconds, before seeing his goal disallowed for offside.

The match then went into extra time, and it was the fresher Italians who scored twice. Austria cut the score to 2-1 with a goal from Kaladzic on 113ᵉ but it would not be enough and Italy went through.

Netherlands 0 - 2 Czech Republic

This is the first feat of the round of 16. The Czechs put their opponent in trouble from the very beginning of the match. It was not until the 39ᵉ minute mark that the Netherlands reacted and forced the goalkeeper to dive to intercept a cross.

The Oranje return to the dressing room without a single shot on target, dominated by the underdog.

The Dutch started the second half with their heads under water and De Ligt made a big mistake in the 52ᵉ minute before being sent off. 15 minutes later Holes rewarded the Czechs efforts with a headed goal.

Schick doubled the lead in the 79th after an excellent service from Holes and Frank De Boer's men were eliminated without a shot on target all night.

Belgium 1 - 0 Portugal

A solid Belgium take on a Portugal with an up and down performance and relying heavily on Ronaldo, all on a pitch of poor quality.

Both teams produced very little play and Diogo Jota missed the target in an excellent position. It was not until the 25ᵉ minute mark and Ronaldo's free kick round the wall that the next chance of the match was found. Courtois is alert and reassures his team.

Just as this flat game seemed to be heading towards a goalless half-time scoreline, Thorgan Hazard, left alone, unleashed a 20-yard shot that hit the net in 42ᵉ minute.

Despite the Portuguese pushing hard, Belgium hold on to the score and are saved by their posts. A Courtois of the highest order finally allows the Belgians to reach the quarter-finals slightly against the run of play.

Croatia 3 - 5 Spain

After a crazy game, Spain manage to eliminate Croatia and reach the quarterfinals!

After an ultra-dominant start to the match by the Spaniards, Unai Simón, the La Roja goalkeeper, completely misses his control of a harmless back pass from Pedri and sees the ball go into the net.

Sarabia erased his keeper's mistake with a goal in the 38ᵉ minute as Spain still dominated the match.

Spain's Azpilicueta gave his team the lead in the 57ᵉ minute and it was not until the 68ᵉ minute that we saw the first shot on target from the Croatians despite scoring.

Ferrán Torres made it 3-1 in 77ᵉ minutes and the Spaniards continued to dominate their opponents. With a few minutes to go, Croatia wakes up for good and starts to push. Orsic kept hope alive with a goal in the 85ᵉ minute before Mario Pasalic saved his people by heading in an injury time equaliser.

Eventually, the Spanish keeper made amends with some excellent saves and Morata and Oyarzabal came to extinguish Croatia's hopes in 100ᵉ and 103ᵉ minutes.

France 3 - 3 Switzerland (t.a.b 4 - 5)

In a scenario as crazy as the Croatia - Spain match, France lost on penalties to an excellent Switzerland.

The Swiss refused to let themselves be dominated and proposed an offensive game, their first chance was rewarded, Lenglet, asleep in his area, let Seferovic find the small net of Lloris thanks to a well placed header.

The world champions were slow to wake up and Nati were awarded a penalty after a foul by Pavard at the 53ᵉ mark. Lloris saves Rodriguez's shot and restarts his team.

The match then ignites and Benzema scores twice in 90 seconds (57ᵉ and 59ᵉ minutes). Les Bleus went back in front and seemed galvanized, Pogba curled a shot from distance into the top corner and stunned the Helvetians in the 75ᵉ minute.

However, Switzerland had not said their last word and Seferovic responded with a brace in the 81ᵉ minute before Gavranovic equalised in the 90ᵉ minute.

Coman hit the bar in injury time and both teams went into extra time.

Mbappé misses his shots (109 and 110' minute) and the game continues into the night for a penalty shootout.

The same Kylian Mbappé is the only one to fail in 5th position during the penalty shootout and the Helvetians advance to the quarter-finals.

England 2 - 0 Germany

At the end of a rather complicated match for both teams, the England qualify, at home for the quarters.

The first half remained fairly empty of chances although the Germans kept their foot on the ball. The two teams neutralized each other and the forwards of both sides seemed uninspired. It was not until the 75ᵉ that we saw some excellent team movement, carried by Sterling and Luke Shaw. Sterling was on the end of it, opening the scoring with a serene flat foot.

Although Mannshaft try to respond, the finish is not there and Muller misses the frame, alone against the keeper, in the 80ᵉ minute. Substitute Grealish breaks through the German defence and gives an excellent ball to Kane who crucifies Germany with a header on 86 minutes.

Sweden 1 - 2 Ukraine

This is at least the 3' surprise of the round of 16. The Ukraine eliminates the Sweden although solid, at the end of extra time.

By eliminating Poland in their 3rd group match, the Sweden had allowed Ukraine to qualify for the last 16.

The start of the match suggested a high tempo with chances on both sides.

There was no question of the Ukrainians playing chicken, and the Manchester City player, Zinchenko opened the scoring after 27ᵉ minutes.

Forsberg, in fine form at this tournament, fired a left-footed shot past the Ukrainian keeper to equalise in 43ᵉ minutes.

The second half turns out to be even crazier than the first with dozens of goal chances! Sydorchuk hit the Swedish post in the 55th minute while Forsberg also hit the post a minute later. The latter saw his shot hit the bar in the 69ᵉ minute before the pace of the game slowed dramatically for the last 20 minutes.

The start of the game as well as the beginning of the second half must have exhausted the players of both teams who hardly offered any play in extra time. Danielson nearly took off the leg of Artem Besedin and the Swede was sent off.

After tasteless extra time, Zinchenko serves Dovbyk who delivers all of Ukraine with a raging header at the 120ᵉ +1.

Euro 2020 quarter-final draw

• Friday 2 July

6pm: Switzerland - Spain: Switzerland, who greatly impressed after earning their qualification against the reigning world champions, can pull off another surprise against a less sovereign Spain than expected.

9pm: Belgium - Italy: This is the shock of the quarter-finals. The Belgium dominated by the Portugal managed to stay solid as well as the Italy, unbeaten for several years and not having conceded a single goal yet during this competition.

• Saturday 3 July

6pm: Czech Republic - Denmark: After the feat against the Netherlands, the Czechs are dreaming of a semi-final, but the Danes have shown their teeth and don't look at risk ahead of this match.

9pm: Ukraine - England: Ukraine hardly eliminated Sweden in extra time, but showed some good things. It is difficult not to envisage all the scenarios despite the England being in form and technically superior.

Euro 2020 Semi-Final and Predictions

While Italy are currently favourites to beat Belgium, the potential return of Kevin De Bruyne and Eden Hazard could make the difference. It remains difficult to predict a winner so easily. As for Switzerland, they could very well repeat the surprise against an uninspired Spain.

On the other side of the draw, the Danes seem to be in great shape and should probably eliminate the Czechs. Ukraine will surely have something to say to England, but the English are keen to reach the next stage and the royal vote that is promised to them. Indeed, the semi-final and final of the tournament will be played at Wembley with 50,000 spectators ready to cheer on the Three Lions while the biggest favourites for the cup remain in the opposite draw!
